Our first day of 79 days. We set off from Seaside at the Lewis and Clark memorial at 8am – just as the first runner from the Hood to Coast relay race (hoodtocoast.com) arrived at the finish line in Seaside. Check out Ryan’s Facebook livestream of our start. Much of our first 15 miles was on the Hood to Coast route, so we were cheering on runners and walkers who in turn were cheering on us. It was lots of fun and quite a charge to make a difference for some very tired looking racers. We thrived on our first big climb of the day – good tough work, but we conquered it – see video.
We heard seals barking in Astoria as we passed along the Riverwalk – so we stopped to see them, then stopped for our first lunch on the road
We then got our first highway experience as we followed US30 for the rest of the day. We’ve stopped in Clatskanie, OR for the night at the city park were we have pitched our tents for the first time since setting out from home.
It was a great first day. Thanks to all our supporters cheering us on today. We couldn’t do it without you! We are ready to get some sleep so we are ready for day 2.
